Dan, welcome to the site :D I have seen a spring loaded mortar type device where you dropped the sinker down the tube and spring fired bait and sinker into the surf but I can't find it on the web right now. I'll get back to you if I find it.

They are called coasters and you can get them from ebay UK or Veals UK. The rods usually have "shrink tube' around their butt to protect the blank but I'm sure some other material would work.

They work fine and allow you to change the reel position. 8)

Sorry, I didn't read that properly. When you said Queensland I thought you meant 'cast net'. A box net - try putting the net on a sandy patch amongst the weed beds near a drop off with 6 inches of water over the top and have the hole facing up towards the surface. Put a hole in a slice of white brea...

PODDY mullet can be caught near drops on sand flats in the net. You don't put bait in it but learn how to cast it so it lands in a perfect circle on the surface and let the weights drag it down and then pull it back in by the rope. The poddies will get caught in the pockets as the net closes around ...

In order to work the circle hook has to go all the way into a fishes mouth then as it is dragged back out of the mouth and over the teeth of the fish the circle hook grabs the jaw. So definately no good for tailor as the line has to run over the teeth. If you don't want to use wire a long shank hook...
