Demonstrating magnetic braking

Post by Rod B » Thu Oct 27, 2005 7:46 pm

Hi, here's a way of seeing the effect of magnetic braking. A few Neo' magnets (4-6), any size, are required, a piece of round bar, brass or aluminium about the same length as the stacked magnets, and a straight length of aluminium angle app 1mtr long.

Prop the length of angle at a steep angle and slide the piece of round bar down the inside of the angle. See how fast it slides. Now repeat using the magnets and see the difference in time. This is what is happening in the reel during a cast. In this case the magnets move relative to the aluminium angle. In a reel the spool moves relative to the magnet/s
