How to Catch a Murray Cod

Post by Tagged » Fri Aug 21, 2009 7:42 am

I'd like to catch tag and release a Murray Cod somewhere in Queensland.
Looking for anything you can tell me.
I have a canoe and a boat or I'am happy to hike, would prefer to do it on lure.

Thanks for the offer, I'd love to fish the rivers down there. Maybe in the summer time, let the ice melt.
It's part of a comp and is contained to Qld only, as we don't like to get beaten by southerns at anything.

I would have thought it would of been a natural feeling :P

The waterways running into Glenlyon Dam would be by pick for easy access. Boat, canoe of bank.

Pretty proud bunch you banana benders  but you might have to eat some humble pie and get hold of some NSW or Vic lures to do the job for you, QLDers don't cut the mustard

Dunno how you'd go down here in the middle of summer Tagged, perhaps late March, early April might be better for that soft QLD skin

Mate, What you need to do is get out to the Inglwood/Yelarbon/Goondiwindi area and spend a bit of time in the towns talking to locals, Often these sort of places have fishing clubs run from local pubs etc. You may be suprised ho helpfull some guys at the local watering hole can be if you shout him a beer, You need to find out where the local reserves are and then i am sure you will have no trouble tagging your cod...Maybe even go to the local tourist info centre and get a map. A small tip is to be sure you try a Bassman Spinnerbaits- Codman series, Great lure, Tenterfield Dart is a sweet Hardbody too!!!. Hope this is some help to you buddy.

G'day tagged, just read your post, if you haven't scored that COD yet.........pretty simple , drive to Tenterfeild , head west to Bonshaw.....around 40 odd kilometers ( been a while & i never measured it) there will be to turn-off on your r/h/side to Riverstone.....Riverstone Crossing .....over the bridge..your back into QLD. Just over bridge swing left into open reserve land that runs along river. You can camp there "No-problems" put your boat or canoe in .... head down stream into very good hole of water. Tow or cast any deep-diving plugs of about 3 to 6 inches long , that will get down 8 to 12 feet , and theres a bloody good chance that you,ll nail your Cod.
Low light times will be best , if you haven't caught one before .....dont give up too quick. Fish the cover and behind any obstructions to the water flow , and after dark ......concentrate on the head of the holes. Good luck Max

Thanks Max, sounds very good. Sounds like you know your stuff.
I've printed it out for directions, might need a GPS.
I think I'll take the boat.
Thanks heaps.

Fish with a local who has caught many Murray Cod in the area. They will know where and when to fish. Which holes and sand banks are empty and which are productive. They will teach you how to recognize when a bait is being sucked-in and when to strike.
