Best route to travel from Sydney to Mallacoota

I'm heading down for the Mallacoota tournament from Sydney and have never been down that way before. Should I go via Cooma/Bombala or down the Princes Hwy along the coast? I would prefer the better grade of road over a quicker route if that is the only factor in selecting between the two.

I too have never done this trip,

I am leaving Newcastle, Thurs arvo, and going via Cooma to Nimmitabel, Bombala then onto Imlay road at Yambulla, then Mallacoota,

I will be towing a my nitro and have been told this is the best route and fastest.

but I am open to better advice.

No, I'm not towing a boat as I'm going as a non-boater. However, if that is the better road for towing, then the grade would be better. Thanks.

G'day fellas,
I drove from Port Macquarie to Mallacoota for the Grand final a couple of years ago. I took the inland way from sydney down to Canberra then through Cooma and down to a place called Rockton. There I headed to the coast and on down the Princes Highway to the Mallacoota turn off. In all it took me 10 hours driving from Port. But Sydney is about 4 hours on from us.
I looked up whereis.com and compared trip times and distances.

Thanks for the further details of towns. It helps clarify the choicest route. I'll print off my Google Map directions now. I'm looking forward to what Mallacoota promises. Hopefully, it is not as wet as Sydney and other parts of the country!
