Easter 2007

Noosa River runs wild despite speed restrictions!

Everyone has a right to enjoy the diversity of the beautiful Noosa River and its surrounding lakes and tributaries. But a steady increase in boating over the past few years has seen the area stretched to its boating capacity during the busy Christmas and Easter periods.

To help ease the impact of boating during these busy times, a seasonal six knot speed limit was introduced in late 2006.

Seasonal speed limits apply from 1 December through to the 31 January and during Easter for a period of 10 days starting from Good Friday. Maritime Safety Queensland is reminding boaties that from Friday, 6 April until Sunday, 16 April, a reduced 6 knot speed limit will apply in these areas.

Despite signage and public notices alerting boaties to the seasonal speed limits, the Christmas period saw numerous boaties issued with infringements for exceeding the new six knot limit. Boaties need to make sure they are aware of speed limits and any other restrictions that might apply in an area before heading out on the water.

With the approach of Easter, when the Noosa River is traditionally more congested than at Christmas, boaties can be guaranteed that the Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol will be out in full force and will be focusing on speeding in the Noosa River. They will also be checking that people are carrying the proper safety equipment and operators hold an appropriate licence.

Personal safety, and the safety of your crew, should be your top priority out on the water, particularly during holiday times where traffic increases as people enjoy Queensland's fantastic climate and pristine waterways. Boat owners and operators who don't abide by regulations will be held accountable and issued with infringement notices.

As a boat owner, be aware that traffic will be heavier than usual — adhere to speed limits and show patience and courtesy to others when out on the water. By taking a common sense approach to boating, you will ensure that a good time is had by all out on the water. You may also save yourself the cost, inconvenience and embarrassment of a fine.
