NSW FisheriesTaste The State's Finest Seafood At Fisheries Open Day

October 24, 2002

Visitors to this Saturday’s NSW Fisheries Open Day at Port Stephens can sample some of the best local farmed seafood in the State, the Director of NSW Fisheries, Steve Dunn, said today.

He said free tasting of local farmed seafood will be on offer, and visitors will have the chance to learn about aquaculture, the world’s fastest growing food produce sector.

“Free samples will include whole snapper, marinated yabby tails, barbecued barramundi and smoked silver perch,” he said.

The Open Day will be at the Port Stephens Fisheries Centre, Taylors Beach Rd, Taylors Beach, on Saturday, October 26, between 10am and 4pm. Entry is free.

Mr Dunn said visitors also can buy some of the State’s best oysters and see a display by the Australian Oyster Opening Champion, Geoff Sharpe, who recently competed at the World Oyster Opening Championships in Ireland.

A host of external exhibitors will also feature displays of recreational fishing, boats, bait and tackle.

Children will be able to take part in fishing clinics and can also “get wet” with a touch tank stocked with urchins, starfish, local and tropical lobsters, abalone, hermit crabs, cockles and other denizens of the deep.

Other attractions include video and poster displays of NSW Fisheries activities, displays of the latest technology in the oyster industry and tours of hatchery facilities showing how oysters and fish are bred.

Entry to the event is free, with fundraising on the day as part of NSW Fisheries continuing support of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

  • Getting There: There is no parking on site, but two free Park and Ride bus services will run every 10 minutes from Salamander Shopping Complex, stopping at bus stops along Salamander Way; and from the Port Stephens Coach Company depot in Port Stephens Drive. To get to the coach depot, turn into Port Stephens Drive from Nelson Bay Rd at the Anna Bay roundabout. The depot is 1km from the roundabout.
