NSW FisheriesByron Bay Fish Attracting Device Back In For Summer

September 18 , 2003

North Coast anglers are set to benefit from tomorrow’s re-anchoring of a fish attracting device off Byron Bay, the Director-General of NSW Fisheries, Steve Dunn, said today.

The device, which was first installed north-east of Julian Rocks last December, will be returned to the same location for the summer fishing season.

“The Byron Bay device was the first of 10 installed along the NSW Coast as part of a $230,000 project funded by the NSW recreational fishing licence,” Mr Dunn said.

“These specially designed buoys, which are removed during winter for maintenance, attract large quantities of fish during summer months.

“The Byron Bay device has been popular with anglers, who have reported increased catches of species such as dolphin fish, Spanish mackerel and small tuna.”

Mr Dunn said the device would be re-anchored by NSW Fisheries staff with help from the Byron Bay Services Deep Sea Fishing Club.

“The trust-funded project also includes a survey to monitor what anglers are catching near the devices.” Mr Dunn said.
