DPICressbrook And Perseverance Closed For Boating And Fishing

October 18, 2002

Lakes Cressbrook and Perseverance near Toowoomba have been closed to recreational users until further notice after routine tests revealed unusually high levels of bacteria in the water.

Toowoomba City Council Community Services Committee Chairperson Cr Sue Englart said the closure was to ensure the safety of dam users while investigations were undertaken to determine the source and life expectancy of the bacteria.

"Because of the high levels of bacteria in the lakes, we have had to suspend recreational activities under the Australian and New Zealand Guidelines for Fresh and Marine Water Quality," she said.

The closures will affect those who use Lake Perseverance for water-skiing and Lake Cressbrook for fishing, canoing, sailing and windsurfing.

Non-water based activities, such as picnicking and camping, are not affected by the suspension, and Lake Cooby remains open.
