DPIRecreational Fishing Forum Heads To Ayr

14 February, 2003

Recreational fishers in the Ayr region will have an opportunity to discuss a range of fisheries management issues at a Department of Primary Industries Recreational Fisheries Forum to be held in Ayr on Thursday (February 20).

Conducted by the Queensland Fisheries Service (QFS), the forum allows members of the public who do not normally have the opportunity to discuss fisheries management issues, a chance to have their say.

QFS Recreational Fisheries Unit manager Terry Healy said QFS was interested in hearing the views of all members of the public not just specific interest groups.

“Groups such as fishing clubs and conservation organisations are normally involved in the decision-making processes,” Mr Healy said.

“However, as fisheries resources are a public resource, this forum provides other members of the community with the opportunity to come and talk to QFS about fisheries management decisions.”

Mr Healy said the aim was to ensure that everyone understood the issues surrounding fisheries resource management in Queensland.

“The more people who are informed about the issues and take part in the decision-making process, the better for the future of Queensland’s fisheries,” he said.

The forum will also feature a presentation from DPI fisheries biologist Stuart Hyland about the CRC reef monitoring of coastal fisheries resources.

The night will be held at Capone’s Function Room in the Queens Hotel, Ayr, from 5pm to 9pm. Contact Terry Healy on 3405 6805 to register.
