DPIFish Fresh Through The Government Gateway
1 December 2003

Online freshwater fishing permits are definitely a case of smart fishing from the Smart State.

Freshwater fishing permits are now available through the Queensland Government Gateway at www.qld.gov.au/fishing, allowing eager anglers to purchase their permits whenever it suits them.

Throughout December 10 lucky people each week who purchase a yearly permit through the Government Gateway will also receive a copy of the Department of Primary Industries publication Freshwater Fishing in Queensland: A Guide to Stocked Waters.

The permits and fishing guides are great Christmas present ideas for angling enthusiasts.

A permit is needed to fish in any of the 29 stocked dams involved in the Stocked Impoundment Permit (SIP) scheme. Permits cost $35 a year or $7 for a week.

Queensland Fisheries Service (QFS) senior policy officer Michelle Hollaway said many freshwater anglers travelled long distances within Queensland and from interstate to fish in stocked dams.

However, sometimes in more remote spots the facilities were not as accessible as other areas.

“Now they can buy their permit online before they leave home and not have to worry about making it to the nearest town before the shop shuts,” she said.

“The Government Gateway provides a convenient, fast and easy way to purchase a freshwater fishing permit.”

Ms Hollaway said money raised through the SIP scheme provided funds to community stocking groups to purchase fish and other activities aimed at enhancing their local fisheries.

“Stocking groups have already benefited from more than $1 million raised since the scheme was introduced in July 2000,” Ms Hollaway said.

“The SIP scheme has proved very effective with more than two million fish stocked in the dams since that time.”

Ms Hollaway also reminded anglers to carry their permits with them when fishing.
