DPIHoliday Goers Encouraged To Understand Netting Rules
16 December 2003

The Department of Primary Industries is encouraging beach goers to become familiar with commercial netting activities on Bribie Island during the summer holiday period.

Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol (QBFP) district manager Steve Dunn said some people were not aware that commercial netting activities were allowed on Bribie Island’s ocean beaches.

Mr Dunn said with the weather warming up and people flocking to Bribie Island for summer, it was important both visitors and residents understood the netting regulations.

Pumicestone Strait including the island’s western shore north of the southern end of South Esplanade at Bongaree, is closed to commercial netting all year round.

The ocean side of the island is only closed to netting for one nautical mile south from the island’s northern tip.

Commercial netting is allowed in all other areas of the ocean beaches.

“There are some people not familiar with the commercial netting rules and don’t realise that these activities are allowed on the island’s popular ocean side,” Mr Dunn said.

“It’s important that everyone understands the rules and regulations to avoid any conflict.”

However, Mr Dunn said weekend netting closures applied on the island’s east coast Southern and Western shores from Skirmish Point from 6pm Friday to 6pm Sunday all year round.

“The weekend closures ensure that during Bribie’s busiest times bathers and recreational fishers have sole use of some parts of the ocean beachers,” he said.
