DPINew Ways To Purchase Fishing Permits
07 August 2003

Anglers can access stocked impoundment permits (SIP) anywhere, anytime as part of a Queensland Government initiative to improve access to government services.

The stocked impoundment permit, administered by the Department of Primary Industries Queensland Fisheries Service (QFS), allows anglers to fish in some of Queensland’s best freshwater fishing spots.

Permits are now available online at www.qld.gov.au by choosing 'make a payment' and following the links, from 90 small business outlets situated near the stocked dams or by calling the Queensland Government Contact Centre on 13 13 04.

Permits are no longer available from any Australia Post outlets.

QFS senior policy officer Michelle Hollaway said by providing three different options anglers could choose the most convenient method for purchasing their permit.

“Setting up the network of small businesses has been a real success, however by also providing online and telephone options local and interstate anglers can buy their permit before they leave home and not have to worry about making it to the nearest town before the shop shuts,” she said.

Permits cost $35 a year or $7 for a week and allow the holder to fish in all 29 of the stocked dams in the scheme.

Ms Hollaway said the money raised by the SIP scheme was distributed to local stocking groups who had found it increasingly difficult to raise the funds to purchase fish.

“Since the SIP scheme was introduced in 2000, the pressure on local communities to find the dollars to restock dams has eased,” she said.

“The scheme has resulted in the stocking of more than 2 million fish and also provides funds for other activities aimed at enhancing the freshwater fishery.”

Ms Hollaway said that by doing the right thing and buying a permit, people were contributing to the quality of freshwater fishing in Queensland and ensuring our rural and regional communities continued to benefit from recreational fishing.
