DPISunfish Capricorn Branch To Benefit From Funding
25 May, 2004

With the help of a Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries (DPI&F) grant, the Sunfish Capricorn branch will undertake valuable research into juvenile barramundi.

Capricorn Sunfish has been awarded $4372.50 to undertake a juvenile barramundi monitoring research project over a 12-month period in the central Queensland region.

The grant is part of a DPI&F funding program that supports recreational fisheries enhancement through education, research, and habitat rehabilitation projects.

The monitoring program for juvenile barramundi will provide an indication of the number of juveniles surviving their youth and making it through to adulthood.

DPI&F recreational fishing manager Terry Healy said the project would help provide an indication of important areas and climatic conditions for the recruitment of juvenile barramundi.

“The Fitzroy River in central Queensland is an important barramundi habitat, for juveniles in particular, and supports significant commercial and recreational barramundi fisheries,” he said.

“Capricorn Sunfish have been monitoring barramundi since 1999, and this newest project will continue to provide valuable findings which will assist DPI&F when determining the best management arrangements for the barramundi fishery.”
