DPITailor Spawning Season Set To Start
26 July, 2004

Anglers should be aware the annual tailor spawning season on Fraser Island starts from midday August 1 to midday September 30.

The closure prevents all forms of fishing on Fraser Island from beaches between Indian Head and Waddy Point.

Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries (DPI&F) resource general manager Jim Gillespie said the closure was aimed at protecting tailor during their vulnerable spawning period.

“Fraser Island has always been a popular tailor fishing destination particularly during the winter months,” Mr Gillespie said.

“However, tailor are particularly vulnerable during the spawning period when they gather in schools, making them an easy target for anglers.

“The closure combined with take and possession and size limits will help to protect them during the spawning period and reduce pressure on fish stocks.”

The take and possession limit for tailor is 20 except for people staying on Fraser Island for 72 hours or more when it is 30. The minimum size limit is 30cm.

Mr Gillespie said tailor were caught off ocean surf beaches and rocky headlands as well as from bays and estuaries from northern beaches in New South Wales to the northern tip of Fraser Island.
