DPIKids Fishing Clinic heading to Boondooma Dam
6 September, 2004

Wondai Shire kids get ready! The Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries (DPI&F) is holding a Kids Fishing Clinic at Boondooma Dam on Friday, October 1.

Forty places are available to children aged between 8 and 15 but young fishing enthusiasts are urged to register quickly to ensure a place.

DPI&F recreational fishing manager Terry Healy said more than 800 kids had taken part in the DPI&F fishing clinics since they were introduced in November last year.

Mr Healy said the support for the clinics from both children and their parents had been overwhelming.

“The feedback has been very positive and the last round of clinics filled up quickly within a couple of days,” he said.

“I expect the Boondooma clinic to do the same so I encourage anyone who wants to learn the fishing basics to nominate quickly so they don’t miss out.”

Mr Healy said the clinics were aimed at introducing children to the joys of fishing by teaching them angling basics and environmental awareness.

Boondooma Dam is one of Queensland’s premier stocked dams and is part of the DPI&F Stocked Impoundment Permit Scheme.

Since the scheme’s inception in 2001, about $85,000 has been contributed to stocking the dam and for other activities aimed at enhancing the fishery.

The Boondooma Dam Fish Stocking and Management Group is supporting the DPI&F fishing clinic and will be on hand to offer advice and assistance to the young anglers.

Every child who attends the clinics will receive a complimentary rod, reel and tackle as well as hat and educational material.

Registration is on a first in first served basis and parents or guardians can nominate their children by calling the DPI&F Call Centre on 13 25 23 from Monday September 13 onwards.
