Hervey Bay parents are being encouraged to spend day fishing with their children. The Chairman of Fraser Coast Sunfish Dr Randal McLellan went on to say that this was a fun day where all members of the family can participate.

Sunfish, the Queensland Industry for Recreational Fishing (QIRF) with special funding from the Minister for Primary Industries and Rural Communities Mr Henry Palaszczuk, are organising a special day for families to enjoy a days fishing along side personalities and with assistance from fishing experts.

The Take a Kid Fishing Day has been held in previous years with excellent participation but this year it will be held in 16 locations around the state on the same day, Sunday 18th May. There will be two venues one at the shelter shed at the Pier in Urangan and the other in the park adjacent to Goodys at Toogoom. Both day will commence with a sign on from 8am onwards

The day will include a safe, friendly venue for the whole family to fish, free sample bag for the kids and random prize draws at the concluding sausage sizzle.

Event coordinator Ian Murphy said this is the first time the day has been held in so many locations on the same day. “Sunfish, the Industry and the Government are all aware of the social benefits of families enjoying time together and what better way than to spend it fishing’, said Mr Murphy.

“If the kids can learn a bit about fishing from the experts on hand to help improve their catches, it can only help them enjoy their leisure time more”.

The day will be totally run by Sunfish members, Tackle shop proprietors, Fish Stocking groups and fishing club members donating their time for the event. All personalities attending the day will also be donating the time to promote the benefits of taking a kid fishing, or maybe it should be ‘take a parent fishing’!
