Boating Fires Spark A Warning To Skippers

DPI24 September, 2002

One woman was taken to Concord Hospital on Sunday with minor burns to her face, hands and feet following the second boating fire in Sydney’s South this month.

NSW Waterways Authority General Manager Operations, Brett Moore said skippers should check their vessels thoroughly before heading out on the water.

“After lying idle over the winter months, it is simple things that can be a safety concern on boats like flat batteries, missing safety gear and fuel problems from lack of use,” Mr Moore said.

“Boat owners should inspect fuel lines for leaks or corrosion and be wary of petrol or LPG odours prior to operating their craft.

“Use of fuel from the previous boating season that may be contaminated can cause the vessel’s engine to fail.

“Skippers should carry a fire extinguisher which is in good working order and ensure their vessel has a fresh supply of fuel.”

The warning came after a 7-metre timber motor cruiser, with an inboard petrol engine was completely destroyed by fire in Botany Bay on Sunday.

The five occupants were rescued by nearby boats and a woman treated for minor burns. In early September, a 5-metre inboard powerboat exploded on the Cooks River. The two adult males and their two sons were forced into the water. The 14-year-old boys were treated for smoke inhalation at the Children’s Hospital.

Mr Moore said Waterways publishes a free Safe Boating Handbook with a comprehensive vessel checklist that skippers can step through before they leave the shore.
