Blown away! Little Wategos Beach can fish OK for bream, tailor and dart in a southerly blow with big seas, but most of the rest of the bay is a wipeout.

A quiet week. Nothing much to report but hell, weve had some good winds from the south! Reports from seasoned anglers say that they have not seen seas this big for possibly two to three years. Consequently we see the beaches pretty well gutted out with a hell of a lot of beach moved, very few live beach worms available but potentially some good beach fishing about to happen. Following a good southerly here we generally see some jew taken from Lovers Point, Flat Rock and on the northern side the Bluff, the breakwalls and some more of those good-sized tailor off Woody. Nobody has been spending much time fishing anywhere, whether in the estuary and definitely not offshore, so I see some better fishing coming this week. By the way, we weighed some great bream from Browns Rocks last Sunday (Mar 4). How about two bream from the one angler which went better than 2kg apiece! They were taken by an angler from Copmanhurst Fishing Club (they had a club outing on) whom I advised on the Saturday to go and pump some yabbies and to fish the rocks. Basically nothing much to report this week but it can only get better.

Wind, rain, snow, sleet, cats, dogs we've had it all over the last week, and you really expect to open up at this site and hear about the fishing! There is not much I can say except that if you are a member of the 'ups and downs' brigade, it is all happening. Large luderick are well and truly on the chew with the best places being the boat ramp, Diggers and the corner of the North Wall and Muttonbird Island. Almost any semi-protected spot tucked into the southern corners will turn up fish. You should also find a few bream running in those areas.
Beyond that, there is not much to add except to keep our fingers crossed that conditions will improve and that we will get to dangle a line next week. Stay tuned.

The weather over the week has not been too kind to anglers. Prior to the big seas there were good catches.
Around fish Rock there were kingies, yellowfin, stripies and mackerel tuna, with dolphin fish caught around the traps. Up off Grassy Head there were good snapper and trag with only a few spotted mackerel to 8kg.
off the rocks there were tailor in some numbers with cobia and jewies under the lighthouse.
The river has been good for flathead to 4.5kg, bream and jewfish. Up around Smithtown blackfish have been sighted.

If ever there is any dirty weather around expect it to appear on weekends, just like it did last weekend! The brave, in bigger boats, fished wide of the Port on Sunday last with kingfish seeming to be the main target of fishos involved. Plenty of legal sized kings came on board but the bad-mannered ones are still swimming free. Every second hook-up involved a lot of to-ing and fro-ing before the reel began to 'smoke' and there was a bust-off.
Big cobia and jewfish turned up at The Jew Bite (Hungry Head) on Friday (Mar 6). Saturday morning there was action galore with birds diving and baitfish leaping out of the water. One fisho who was part of the action said he even saw a small black marlin join the chase and feasting on a variety of baitfish that were on offer, all of which were well within casting distance.
The south wall is still giving up good lizards. Maybe the volume has dropped off a little in the last few weeks, but it will go through until Easter, providing the river does not flood.
Bream in and around the lower estuary are in reasonable numbers. A lot of them will not measure and I am hearing that they are as fat as mud. By April/May these bream will measure the 25cm easily.
Strong southerly winds early this week have shut down most types of fishing. After the blow, fishing will be good all round. The first boats that get to offshore reefs normally get 'steroid' snapper.

Strong south-easterly winds and big seas over the past few days should stir up fishing prospects when the weather settles down.
Estuary: Bream have moved inside the heads off Tomaree seeking shelter from the rough seas. The Tubes and the Boulders in front of the hospital are firing. There are flathead at the Shoal bay boat ramp and Little Beach on lures on the making tide. Garfish from the jetty at Shoal Bay. Jewfish on the full moon at the Psyche wreck and Middle Island. An early run of luderick on the co-op and anchorage walls.
Beaches: The mullet run will start with this blow and bream, tailor and jewfish will fire on Stockton, One Mile and Fingal beaches.
Rocks: Rock blackfish and luderick in sheltered coves from Tomaree to Birubi. Snapper on the prowl at Fishermans, Boat Harbour and Fingal Head. Jewfish on this moon at Rocky Point and Sunny Corner.
Offshore: Hopefully the blow will push the bigger pelagics in close. Most marlin taken during the inter-club tournament were from 80 fathoms or 30 miles offshore. Small blacks will move in closer. Stacks of dolphin fish from 20 fathoms. Cobia turned up over the past week or so around East Head, Broughton and the Tuck. Trag on gibber and school jew at the Looking Glass and the 21. Squire in the shallows of North Island and the Sisters at Broughton.

Sam Connors had fun off Fairlight Beach one day last week spinning for tailor. One chopper jumped on his lure and was struggling its last in the shore break when a huge flathead leapt from the depths and engulfed the tailor and Sams lure. He managed to land both fish.
With the extremely rough weather of late, reports have been few and far between, but those which have filtered through have been promising. North Harbour (Manly Cove) has been producing heaps of flathead on striped tuna fillets, according to John James. In the deeper channels of North Harbour, large whiting are falling for peeled prawns all through the day. Down near Dobroyd Point, frigate mackerel were surfing the big waves last Sunday (Mar 6). Captain Kurt and crew from Fish Outta Water trolled minnow lures across the 2-metre swells and managed to connect with a few.
The Wedding Cake markers are producing a few legal kingfish which strongly prefer fresh squid. Theyre biting better when theres a bit of run in the tide.
Out wide, the dolphin fish are bouncing around in plague proportions. In the Port Stephens inter-club tournament last weekend hundreds of them were tagged and released. All crews had to do was find a floating object and enjoy.
Around Sydney Heads kingfish to 8kg attacked the 85g to 200g Raider lures offered to them by Alex Bellissimo and friends. Alex tried to entice them with large slimy mackerel as well but had no livie success until he tried a lowly live yakka.
Dee Why rocks have snapper 500g to 700g on fresh squid early mornings and late afternoons, with some good bream thrown in for variety. Shane Tipper caught blackfish at the usual haunts around Curl Curls weedy rocks. Alex Bellissimo also says there have been heaps of blackfish all along the coast, with all the heavy seas breaking off plenty of food for them.
As soon as the weather passes, there will be plenty of great rock fishing to be had, but be careful until the swell drops. Fish Outta Water has some uniquely Australian-made wearable lifejackets, which wear like a normal parka or vest but if you fall into the drink, they automatically inflate into a lifejacket. top idea for the rock fisho.

There is not a lot to report this week due to the inclement weather. There have been a few anglers trolling up some bonito, tailor and kingfish around the middle of Botany Bay.
Anglers fishing the rocks have been getting very good catches of bream on cunje., prawns, nippers, striped tuna and pilchards. Places worth a try include the northern end of the rock platforms at Coalcliff, Stanwell and Garie beach.
Some good sized whiting have been caught at main bar on nippers and blood worms. Flathead a been caught on lures near the weed beds in the main channel of Port Hacking. If you are after live prawns, Botany Bay wrigglers, pink nippers, blood and beach worms, we have the lot at the shop. Come in and ask for these great baits.
