Mandy at Dave’s Bait Shop says there are some nice jew in the river, mainly from the walls, and also at Flat Rock. Flathead going OK up to Wardell and beyond. The odd bream still around. Offshore for some nice snapper, jew and pearl perch. Blackfish at Prospect bridge.
At Evans Head there are a few tailor and bream up Airforce Beach with the best water on the evening high tide, when you could also pick up a travelling salmon. Maybe a show for some evening jew from Airforce to Broadwater. Swell appears to be making. Not much action around the headlands on Thursday apart from a few very small tailor and not much bait working. River is very clear with a few bream and flathead around the bridge; again, not much bait. Offshore has been pretty slow on the days when the wind has eased up, with small trag and smaller silver trevally the mainstays along with a few squire and the very occasional better snapper. Dreaded leatherjackets out wider but there are also some good reds.

Flathead in the Maclean Broadwater are going quite well on plastics. A few blackfish around Collis’s Wall, where I got 15 on Wednesday. Jewfish on the breakwall with a couple caught every night, or every other night. Not much from offshore.

Peter Byron reports the beaches are pretty quiet apart from tailor and salmon. Some good blackfish in most of the estuaries and a few bream in the lower systems, especially around the racks and rock walls. Offshore, there’s the odd snapper and mixed reefies along with hordes of voracious leatherjackets.

Port Macquarie

At long last some reasonable rain, a decent blow and bream, blackfish and drummer have all improved.
On the beaches, things are certainly looking up, with spits and holes re-forming following the big seas a couple of weeks ago. Encouraging reports of bream from Lighthouse and Rainbow beaches, along with whiting, the odd tailor, and probably school jew over the full moon. Plenty of salmon on all beaches.
In the estuaries, blackfish have at long last made a solid appearance, with the south and north walls providing plenty of action and a few reasonable hauls upstream. Flathead have slowed a little but still the odd good. Bream have improved but are still patchy.
Drummer finally appearing at , Blueface, Miners, Lighthouse and Plommer and surrounds. Look for the more washed out ledges and you should get action. Lighthouse has a few small tailor with bream after dark.
Offshore, when conditions allow, bottom-bashers are still scoring small to medium snapper, pearlies and other reef species but leatherjackets are in plague proportions in places. Dominic Vidot bagged four nice drummer close in off Lake Cathie early in the week on squid.

Sydney Northern

Mick from Allie Hunter Charters hooked yellowfin to 25kg while cubing and landed a 120kg mako and dropped another of similar size. Mick is in the midst of a very consistent season and could provide the fish of a lifetime. This tuna season, reports have been threefold what last season laid on.
Sydney Harbour dished me out a couple of squid one evening but I couldn’t convert them into fish during the ensuing beach. The Harbour is host to schooling salmon and tailor which are still quite boat-shy. These fish can still be trolled or spun up and are great fun on light tackle, as Des from Hookem & Cookem showed the boys during the week.
Pete Le Blang says Pittwater fishing is not too bad with plenty of blackfish near the marinas and the local rat kingfish population also appearing. Your best chance is a peeled prawn unweighted – good luck.

Sydney Southern

I ventured out to Sydney Heads last Sunday with Steve Edmonds from Shakespeare to put a couple of new rods (Pflueger Trion 2.1m soft plastic) through their paces. Even though there weren’t as many schools of salmon about as there were a couple of days previous, we both managed fish to around 2.5kg on 3kg line and some silver trevally. When we arrived back at the ramp I spoke to three anglers who had fished Sow and Pigs for 27 silver trevally and a rather large cowanyoung. There have also been a number of leatherjackets caught in North Harbour, the small cove at Manly, Watsons and Rose bay wharfs and the western side of Clarke Island.
Further upstream Goat Island is worth a try for bream. Even though there may not be a lot of them around, the size does make up for the lack of numbers. Bream are also worth a try in the back areas of the Iron Cove River.
Scott Lyons fished the oil wharf, Watts Reef and the eastern side of the breakwall at Port Botany for trevally, bream and leatherjackets. He also trolled the wall in Yarra Bay for tailor.
Botany Bay has started to improve over the last week. Flathead are being caught on the drift out in front of Dolls Pont. The run-up tide seems to be producing the better fish. The end of the third runway is worth a try for silver trevally and bream on the run-up tide. Make sure that you have a constant berley trail going.
The luderick are on the chew in the Georges and Woronora rivers. If you don’t know where to fish, it would be a good idea while you are out on the water to take note where the regular guys are fishing and put those places into the memory bank. Places worth a try are the old bridge in the Woronora River, Soil Point, Cattle Duffers, the wall at Chipping Norton and just east of the Alfords Point bridge.
Squid are just about everywhere in Port Hacking. Work a few different colours of jigs and try and try two at the same time. There are also plenty of leatherjackets in Port Hacking so tie up a paternoster rig, get some peeled prawns and get yourself a few.
Fishing classes
Classes on how, where and when to fish the waterways of Sydney from the shore begin on August 5. Cost is $80. Email me at gbrown1@iprimus.com.au or phone 0422 994 207 or next time you are passing the shop come in and book.

Wollongong

Lake: Whiting near the bowling club park on squirtworms and bloodworms. Plenty of blackfish in the channel between the islands on weed and squirtworms. The odd leatherjacket near the kiosk on prawn pieces. Mullet in Macquarie Rivulet on bread and bread flies. Mullet Creek has nice bream but the clear water is a problem.
Rocks: Mainly salmon and tailor with most headlands working, best are probably Honeycomb at Port Kembla, Cowries at Shellharbour. Metal lures around 40-50g working best. Barrack Point and Beakie Bay for blackfish on cabbage. Some snapper around Kiama on slab baits.
Offshore: Plenty of squire on the South East Grounds, Church Grounds at Shellharbour and Bandit Reef off Bellambi. Some nice mowies on Wollongong Reef. Salmon and tailor behind the breakers. Water is around 14°.

Narooma

Not much happening. Island is dead, beaches probably the best bet for salmon and tailor. Everything else, to be honest, is shut down. Water 11° in the estuary. But it’s 18° at the island so there’s hope in the way.

Bermagui
Offshore: Not much at the island that we know of but reef fishing is still quite good for snapper, mowies and tiger flathead around the edges.
Estuary a bit cold for much with the harbour about the only place locally worth trying for blackfish and bream. Rocks not too bad for drummer and groper, beaches a bit ordinary.
