South West Rocks
Well we have had another great week in paradise, with fantastic weather and pretty good ocean conditions, along with reports of good catches from all over South West Rocks.
This week I witnessed hundreds of Black Fish swimming up river rolling from side to side on the surface obviously spawning. What a great site to see, so if the Black Fish have been a little quiet that’s the reason. There are plenty of Bream around in the river on the turn of the tides. The river is crystal clear so last of the run out is best. Smithtown and Kinchela has been fishing well for Flathead and Bream. A few whiting are starting to be caught. Jewfish have been lurking around with Andrew Trapple hooking a nice 10 kilo Jewfish around Jerseyville on soft plastics. If you are chasing Bass, the Kempsey Bass Club had their Comp on the second weekend in September. This event is a catch and release event where most of the Bass caught were between the rail Bridge in Kempsey and Green Hills.
Fishing the Beach this week has been encouraging. Smoky Beach has Bream coming in with some early season Whiting. There have been the odd Tailor around but you have to work for them. The Salmon have slowed down on Back Beach but there are small Whiting around. Cap Beach has Bream and Flathead on the North End.
Good reports from the Rock hoppers this week with some nice Bream being caught along the coast. We have had reports of Jewfish around the Jail rocks being hooked on light Bream gear. There are still some Tailor around off the rocks but you need to be there early. Hat Head is fishing well for Jewfish but getting some local knowledge is the trick.
King Fish are back around Fish Rock in big numbers. They are still a little finicky at this stage but they are being hooked up. Around 80 cm, there not monsters but there are bigger ones underneath. Dolphin Fish are starting to appear around the traps with a nice 12 kilo bull coming in. Late last week Yellow Fin were out at the Canyons up to 40 kilos and the boy’s left them biting. Snapper are up north around Grassy and Scotts. Some nice very tasty Venus Tusk also coming in. Leather Jackets have slowed this week.
Until next week, wishin’ you good fishin’

Port Macquarie

In the estuary, flathead appear the best bet with reasonable numbers of fish showing up from most locations. Reports have come in with good fish taken from Limeburners, Settlement Point, Blackmans Point, Rawdon Island and basically anywhere else in between. Bream numbers continue to be relatively quiet although the odd fish is still around, with a decent drop of rain needed to see these fish again on the chew. On the blackfish front, results have been a little on the inconsistent side, with the North Wall remaining the pick of locations. Plenty of Garfish around Pelican Island and up at Rawdon Island for those keen on great light line action.
On the beaches, plenty of salmon about with most beaches seeing these great sport fish on offer both day and night. Worms or pillies are both proving popular with the sambos. Tailor remain quiet with many anglers noting this has been one of the poorest tailor seasons for some time locally off the sand. A few bream can be found on Lighthouse, whilst North Beach and North Haven have both yielded the odd school mulloway, however in the main keen jew fisho&Mac226;s are putting in plenty of hours for only average returns. Red weed remains in places, however to date it is not thick enough to cause major concerns. Fingers crossed it stays this way.
Off the rocks, drummer have been a little quiet however a few anglers continue to manage a fish or two each outing, with Plommer again proving to be the pick of locations. Unlike the beaches, tailor remain a viable option, with those who fished north last weekend picking up a couple of nice bags. Also off the rocks, some good sized groper continue to be taken, with both Point Perpendicular and Plommer proving some nice fish, however tailor numbers continue to be inconsistent at best.
On the outside scene, John from Ocean Star advised good numbers of snapper to around 2 kilos have been on offer, with the better catches being achieved from the shallower reefs. Plenty of morwong, pearlies and most pleasingly, heaps of rat kings as well. Leatherjackets remain in reasonable doses, although most are out around the 80-metre mark. Geoff Shelton also advises NSW Fisheries have re attached the head gear to the existing FAD which is great news for the summer season, however stay tuned as we may have some exiting info regarding further FAD enhancements in the next few weeks.

Sydney Northern

Once again Mother Nature besets all four seasons upon us in 7 days – harsh winds and plenty of white caps made it hard work offshore with mako sharks and pearl perch dominating reports and a few ribbon fish thrown in.
At times during the week plenty of angling options provided good fun and tucker for those lucky enough to be on the spot.
Sydney Harbour, though still quite cold has choppers spread throughout with salmon schools surface feeding and just outside the heads, you can see em all the way to Longy. Some reasonable keeper snapper and trevally are taking most offerings along inshore reefs. Black fishing has eased up slightly with visibility increasing after the mild wet we just experienced, Dee Why and Longy have had some good drummer reports and bream in the wash. Baitfish are quite accessible and more squid are on the move, rocky headlands are supplying results using big jigs and spikes, a decent float and a 2 meter drop will work well.
Pete Le Blang tells me up north the water temp has its bite about it still but bread and butter species like bream and whiting are taking baits sent there way. Pete had a ripper chat at Thursday night Fish ‘n’ Tips talk here at Fish Outta Water, he divulged plenty of secrets and even dished out rather descriptive maps of his favourite locations. Craig McGill has the floor this week covering soft-plastics and Sydney species plus whatever else comes up, ring F.O.W. on 99499488 for your free booking and bring a mate, Strudwick are donating one “Sik Stic” per night valued at nearly $200 so a good night may evolve into a great night.
The Fish Outta Water/Weekender Winter Photo comp winner is Jono Shales with a decent fly caught salmon out front, Jono goes into the draw to win the charter with Pete Le Blang of “Harbour & Estuary Charters” in Pittwater, prize will be drawn in Oct/Nov and is valued at over $350 – weekly winner also receive a F.O.W. cap valued at $20.
