COMPILED WEEKLY BY GARRY SMITH IN CAIRNS:

Gold Coast
There have been strong winds for most of the last week on the Gold Coast. The swell hasn’t been too bad though, so plenty of fishermen have braved the winds and headed offshore.

Mornings were definitely the best time to head through the bars last week, with some nice fish taken off Southport and Tweed. The mackerel have been very patchy but a few spotties were taken on the crowded grounds at Palm Beach and Mermaid. Trolling small skirts and casting pilchards were the most effective methods. Some nice spanish mackerel turned up on the Tweed Nine Mile, along with yellowfin tuna and the occasional wahoo on trolled Halcos and Mackbaits. A few of the larger boats trolled large skirts or small tuna on the 50s and beyond targeting some large (300kg) blue marlin and a few big yellowfin tuna. Trolling skirts and Halcos between the 36 and 50 fathom lines off Southport accounted for a few dolphinfish, yellowfin tuna and mack tuna. The shallow reefs fished well for some quality squire around dawn. Pilchards and fresh fish strips worked well on these fish, and were also effective on parrotfish and trag jew. The 36s produced a mixed bag of fish on pilchards, squid and flesh baits, with squire, parrot, pearl perch and pigfish taken during the week. Jigging heavy metal jigs along the 50 fathom line east of Southport was a good way to connect to a big kingie or amberjack.

There was plenty of action in the estuaries during the week. The Seaway produced some good fish with plenty of bream about. These fish could be targeted from the walls or in boats using whitebait, yabbies and flesh strips. The hole at the end of the north wall produced trevally, tailor, school jew and sharks on soft plastics and live mullet or herring. Working the length of the north wall with metal lures or soft plastics on a short metal trace was a good way to pick up tailor and a few trevally. There have also been some big mangrove jack busting up anglers fishing livebaits or soft plastics around the pipeline. The weedbeds throughout the Broadwater have fished well for gar and a few reasonable bream. Flathead have been prolific in the Broadwater and further up the rivers. Fishing livebaits, small diving lures or soft plastics has been producing plenty of these fish to around 60cm. There have been a few whiting about for those fishing the channels on an incoming tide with bloodworms, yabbies or shrimp. In the upper reaches of the Nerang a few trevally, mangrove jack and cod have been taking minnows, soft plastics and livebaits cast around rockbars and dropoffs.

The beaches have fished well in the early mornings for a mixed bag of fish. Plenty of anglers have been trying for early season tailor at South Straddie, the Spit, Narrowneck and the southern beaches. A few of these fish did turn up just prior to dawn and were landed on pilchards and metal lures. Some reasonable bream and tarwhine were taken in the same areas on pilchards, whitebait and beachworms. The shallow gutters at the Spit and Broadbeach have been producing some good catches of whiting and dart on beachworms and pippies.

Hinze has been fishing very well during the week with some good bass landed. The afternoons and early evenings preceding the storms we experienced were a great time to cast small poppers and surface lures to bass in the inlets and grass fringes. Some great fish to 48cm were landed after smashing lures on the top of the water. Some reasonable Yellowbelly were also taken in the mornings by anglers trolling deep diving lures around the rocky points and steep banks.

Moreton Bay - Wide
Nothing to report as I had Easter off with my family, catching mud crabs, prawns, bream and catfish up the Pine River. I’m back in the saddle this week and am hoping the cooler weather has brought a few snapper with it. I look forward to telling snapper tales from here on into Winter.

Very little wind and mill pond waters greet us every morning at the moment, making it hard not to call in a sicky or two. The fishing has been worth it, let me tell you.

We all saw the millions of pilchards being chomped by the sharks off the Gold Coast. It was the same up here with mackerel and tuna smashing every bait fish school to pieces. Even blokes in small tinnies are catching them, because they are so close to Brays Rock. If I owned a blow up I would have a crack at them.

All the reefs have terrific activity, with a large range of fish being landed on a consistent basis. The main stays are snapper (who can believe the run), cod, parrot, mackerel and dolphinfish, along with the occasional sweetlip and coral trout.

Murphys dished up some red throat, along with small sweetlip, a ton of gummy sharks and some good sized fingermark on Friday evening. We had a massive berley trail going, without too much success. Another story where there were plenty of fish around a full moon and perfect tides, with very limited action.

Small blacks are still taking baits out around the Banks and Caloundra Wide and the off-shoot to those is tuna and mackerel. Over Easter we went out three times but it is too late to show you some pictures this week. I will post them on the site next report.

The passage has flathead, trevally and whiting along the deeper runs and stacks of muddies to boot. I did a bait run last week with Old Mate and we caught 18 big mullet, along with 90+ herring in as little as one hour. Our aim was the mullet but the herring are great for outside trips, jacks and the flathead.

Once again we will need to call on your patience over the holiday period. When we took off for Murphy’s at 4am there was not a parking space for the boat in the 70 car park allotment. I for one am not getting up any earlier than 4am just to get a park. Most showed some common sense and plenty of patience so keep up the good work.

All in all - a great break. I hope you all had a top Easter and some great fishing.

Northern Sunshine Coast

Easter is a fabulous time to take the kids fishing. With a full moon, the afternoons, evenings and nights produce the best results. The weather was fabulous. Early morning offshore expeditions in the bay have been good, afternoon abating winds helpful, and cool crisp mornings fabulous for out on the river casting surface poppers and soft plastics for trevally and tailor.

The Woods Bays have been best for trevally and tailor, plus whiting, bream and flathead around the river mouth, the Frying Pan and along the Gympie Terrace stretch. The odd mangrove jack has been on the prowl at night around the Munna Point Bridge and the Tewantin Ski Run stretch.

On the surf beaches there have been some good tailor at northern Sunshine Beach, amongst dart and whiting, and at Coolum, good whiting in the shallow white wash. On the North Shore and along Rainbow Beach dart have been in huge numbers, averaging around the 400 gram mark, and taking live worms.

On the offshore scene, quality coral trout have been taken at Sunshine Reef, while North Reef produced Spanish and spotted mackerel, pearl perch and sweetlip.

Hervey Bay

With good weather, and heaps of boats on the water, catches have been reasonable. On the Arti at the change of tide grass sweetlip, blackall and the odd trout have been taken.

Around the beacons a few mackerel have been taking spoons but better catches have come from Maringa and Arch Cliffs. For those wanting a bit of fun, schools of longtail tuna are scattered throughout the bay. For best results a very high speed reel is required, along with small slugs.

In the rivers, salmon, flathead and the odd barra are chasing lures and plastics. Prawns and crabs are still around.

On the beaches reasonable whiting catches have been recorded, with the better ones coming from Dundowran where there are fewer swimmers.
Winter whiting are being taken in Gataker's Bay but not in large numbers.
At night on the pier and around the rocks a few bream are keeping the patient angler interested.

Bundaberg
The fishing this past week has been great with good reports of big whiting throughout the rivers. Some of the fish are reaching 38cm in length and have been caught in good numbers. Drifting and anchoring up on the shallow sand banks and using yabbies and beach worms for bait has been working well.

Around the bridges some good grunter have been caught with fresh prawns and sprat. Some big bream, flathead and the odd jack have been caught here also.

There is still a few small mackerel down around the mouths of the rivers. Pillies and lures should help you out there.

There are still a few muddies and prawns about and a feed of prawns and muddies sounds a treat.

Bart and I fished the Cania Dam Family Fishing competition recently and caught some great fish. Plenty of saratoga, bass and yellowbelly, so if it happens to get a bit windy, fish some of our local dams. It is a great windy option. Monduran has produced some great barra this past week, with some anglers catching up to ten barra for the day, so this can be another option.

Hi Folks,

Sorry about missing last week’s report from Monduran, but it was quite a hectic week for me with charters and the Easter Bunny to organize. It was a good week to report, as there were plenty of barra on the chew, but you have not missed too much if you had arrived this week on the moon.

Most of our trips this week were late afternoon /night charters. Almost everyone I spoke to at the ramp had a story to tell of the one that got away or some nice photo's to show off. There would not have been too many unhappy anglers of late.

Over a three night period we boated and lost 20+ barra ranging from 30cm to 86cm. A memorable trip for the week, which I am sure you will read about in the QFM magazine next month was with Jason Medcalf and Jason Ehrlich from Toowoomba. The fishing was great, with myself and Jason Ehrlich clearing the catfish out of the way for Jason Medcalf to pick up the barra. By the end of the night we had rolled quite a few barra and I had lost a nice one on a Tango Dancer on the surface. (If Jason does do his article I hope he doesn't leave out from when we actually left his place and all the events that unfolded until we made it to Lake Monduran).

The following afternoon and night was even better, with the barra jumping the highest and most frequent I have ever seen. John Davidson had two in the boat in less than 30 minutes and from then on it was just bust ups, as they hit us and shook our lures on the leap. If you want to get some great barra fishing in before they shut down for the cooler months I would head to Lake Monduran as much as you can for the next couple of months. Otherwise you will end up like me, with withdrawal symptoms by June, wishing you would have made it that one more time.

Until Next Week, Safe Boating

Stanage Bay
How'd from Stanage Bay, Shoal Water & surrounding islands,
Well Easter has been and gone and what an Easter we had. The wind wasn't too bad, so offshore fishing was the target. Hot days also kept the estuary firing, so good fishing and crabbing was had by all.

Our Easter fishing comp turned out to be a winner, and one people should put in their calendar for next year. Crab tying, tug of wars and people just having a good time were the go for the day.

Out on the reefs, not many returned without coral trout in the icebox. Some real quality trout, up to 6kg, were weighed in. Lippas, parrot and cod made up the rest, with only a few reds making an appearance.

Back in the estuary, those huge muddies are still coming in. Actually some crabs up around 2.5kg were used in our annual crab tying comp, keeping most of the competitors watching their fingers.

Grunter, bream and salmon are still keeping most fishos happy, with some real nice sized grunter in amongst them. The jew have gone into hiding, with only a few being weighed in.

The road report is still okay. A few trailer parts were sold but most people are not complaining too much. Remember we have a few vacancies for the second half of the year, so if you want a holiday in one of Australia’s most remote little parts, please give us a call.

Until next week, yours in fishing and crabbing

Whitsundays - Bluewater
After almost three months of blood, sweat and lots of money (tears) 'Marlin Blue' is finally back in the drink and fishing again. The old Fiat 370 hp engines gave her a cruise speed of 17 knots and maximum speed of 21 knots. The new Cummins 420hp engines, gear boxes and props push out a cruise speed of 23knots and full noise of 30 knots. The lengthy exercise was well worth it, as travelling time to the fishing grounds will be cut by almost one third.

The new moon sailfish bite will happen in April and I predict the mackerel bite to start on black Friday the 13th of May. Once again the rain we enjoyed in January and February will see massive bait schools in the Whitsunday's and another great year of fishing.

Cheers Ken.

As the weather improved so has the fishing. Missionary Bay has fired up for those keen on chasing jacks. The best time to catch these is when the water is just under the canopy on the shallow side of the creek. Makes casting lures a bit difficult but the rewards are there, with 40+cm fish attacking lures. Pink lures seem to be the go.

Good barra have been hooked in the creeks, mainly on the drains at the bottom of the tide. Yours truly dropped a 1m+ fish, or should I say it dropped me off. As it came out of the water the fish went one way and the lure the other! Leads deep divers have been the go. Work them deep out of the drain.

Fun barra are still to be had off the rocky headlands but they are a bit slow to hook up. Still plenty of good fish to 70cm are being hooked up in the Marina on live bait.

That's all for this week. Safe Boating and I'll See Ya on the water and remember "Fish for the Future ,Practice Catch and Release"

Cairns - Reports compiled by Garry Smith

The freshwater and the reef have been the pick of spots lately. The fresh has fired as the rivers and creeks cleared after recent heavy rain. Sooties and JP’s have been the main players with some anglers getting onto barra, mainly by using mud cod for bait.

The weather was perfect until Sunday for reef fishing with many anglers taking advantage of the long weekend and good weather coinciding. The reef has produced some XOS Spaniards, along with good catches of trout and big mouth nannygai, and a sprinkling of mangrove jack, gold spot cod, small mouth, long nosed emperor and red emperor. Most of the reds were in 40 to 50 metres of water, out on the flat rubble country, away from the reef.

Well it was great to finally have an Easter break which poured on the good weather. Around the traps you've never seen so many people take to the water over the weekend period.

From reports which have filtered through the beaches are alive with a jelly prawn hatch, which in turn has sparked the tarpon, queenfish and barramundi along the Four Mile Beach foreshore. Also it has attracted a couple of massive manta rays which have come in for an easy feed. Apparently Wonga Beach and Newell Beach are experiencing a good run on the bigger prawns along the beaches.

In the rivers and creeks the barramundi were consistent, particularly on dusk. Trevally, bream, grunter and mangrove jack provided enough entertainment during the day. The systems are full of sardines, so live bait is not a problem to gather.

On the reef most anglers scored a good feed of coral trout, with other species mainly being spangled emperor and sweetlip. A few big mackerel up to 20kg were registered, as well and northern bluefin tuna which have been spasmodically amongst the action.

Locals and visitors would all agree it was a good holiday break, thanks mainly to the good weather.
