Geoff Spaddacini Goes Back To Back
(8 & 9/3/2003)

Geoff Spaddacini made it two from two when he won the Perth round of the WA BREAM circuit. Geoff won the same event last year and this year's back to back win clinched the 2003 WA BREAM Angler Of The Year title.

50 anglers competed in reasonably tough conditions over the two days. 42 anglers weighed in 162 bream for a total of 76.47 kilos. A screaming easterly wind and temperatures over 40 degrees Celsius made fishing very difficult.

However anglers still caught plenty of good bream showing that the tournaments are pushing fishing to a new level. With the WA BREAM Series throwing up all sorts of conditions this year anglers have shown that bream can be caught in all sorts of tough and trying conditions and all on sorts of tides.

The Perth winner Geoff Spaddacini weighed in 10 bream for a total of 6.72 kilos to beat home Kurt Blanksby by a mere 160 grams. Geoff also took out the big bream with a bream of 1.5 kilos and described his win as a fairytale.

Geoff said "It's a fairytale to win Perth again, to win the angler of the year title, get big bream for the round and then to qualify for the National bream final as WA team Captain, it's a dream come true and I'm totally stoked.

I really wasn't confident coming into this round as Nick and I have found Perth a very hard place to fish. We could catch bream but consistency was hard to find. Mark Halse showed us some new ways to fish in Walpole and now Perth is a very different river to fish."

Geoff caught all his bream on Oargee Lil Rippers. "Nick and I just found that they are great little lures and in pre-fish they caught bream out of snags where other lures never got a touch. I used them through the tournament and they caught me good fish."

Geoff said that he caught most of his bream in the Perth Water area between Bunbury Bridge and the Narrows, however on day one he fished the Maylands area near Tranby house and caught some good bream there.

"I knew the Perth water area held good fish as I'd caught a few there in pre-fish. It's just a matter of covering ground properly and finding what the bream will take. This weekend that was the Oargee Lil Ripper. It worked well for me and I caught my big bream on it just out the front of the Heli Pad there near the Causeway."

Geoff will now be the WA team captain for the national BREAM final to be held in NSW later this year. Geoff said he was confident that the WA anglers could cut it on the East Coast. " I've caught bream on the east coast and I can tell the guys here that essentially they are the same fish to fish for. The area and surroundings may be different but that's it. We have a good mix of experience and youth in the team and a great mix of various fishing styles."

When asked if he thought a WA angler could win Geoff replied by saying. "The advantage that we will have is that we will be a fishing as a team, we have 8 anglers who will be all working together to put as many bream in each of those 8 boats as possible. We will be sharing as much information as we can just to get at least one of us up there. Where as the other states will be going for individual positions."

Geoff concluded his fairytale weekend by saying, "I'd like to thank my sponsors Fishing WA and BreamMaster.com for all their support this year. Thanks to Fishing WA for providing an airfare to the final and thanks to Bream Master for kitting me out with all the lures I needed to win this year. I also can't thank Ira Fehlberg for brining this sport to WA."

Team Bream Master's Kurt Blanksby used his deadly BassMaster jigs, Pumpkinseed Sliders combination to take out second place. The same combination that took him to victory at the season opener at Mandurah. Kurt weighed in 10 bream for a total of 6.52 kilos.

Kurt Blanksby started out on the first day by heading down to The Flying Squadron yacht club to start fishing. Kurt said " a few other boats had fished it already and I saw Madaffari there. I got my first fish there on a 1/16oz jig. You have to get right, right down on the bottom and it takes awhile to sink but I think that the lighter jig gives the plastic a more natural action.

We then moved over to South Perth yacht club and fished the outside there. I got my 2nd fish there but a few other boats had also fished here before me. I then moved to Royal Perth yacht club, which was no good, but I pulled two fish off the two little jetty's next to it there.

We then moved up to the narrows and I got busted up big time on the pylons there by a good fish. I couldn't pull a bream out of there so we just fished the shore area. With just 20 minuets to go on the first day I got my biggest fish of the day. On the second day Geoff Paulic and I started out at the Narrows again and on my very first cast I got done in again on a pylon and was very disappointed to drop a good fish early. We then headed downstream for a while but came back up to Narrows and stayed out of the heat. We stayed there for hours and I caught about 7 good fish. Geoff was using Sliders for the first time and caught his new personal best bream of 1.3 kilos. About every half an hour or so we pulled in a bream and just kept plugging away.

I'm total surprised at coming second and it still hasn't sunk in yet. There was about 30 or 40 good anglers competing and I'm surprised to go so well against such good company. I don't think I was that much better than anyone else, I got some lucky breaks and my decision to fish the deeper water payed off for me."

Kurt's 2nd place pushed him up the points and he qualified for the National BREAM Final. Kurt was once again surprised but delighted by this. "What can I say, I honesty never thought I would qualify, I was thinking that maybe after about 5 or 6 years on the circut I might have shot at it but I never expected to qualify in the first year. Over there I'll just be happy to get some fish, it would great to place high but as long as I get on the board I'll be happy. It will be hard fishing in unfamiliar waters but I think we can catch bream over there."

Kurt fished a TPS Strudwick 6 foot rod, with an Okuma 20 reel spooled up with 4lb Fireline down to a 1.5m leader of 10lb Penn mono. Kurt said that his knots on Fluoro Carbon had slipped and the mono landed all his bream.

Team Strudwick's Ian Sewell came in third place with a bag of 10 bream for 5.04 kilos. Ian caught all his fish on Atomic soft plastics and fished in similar areas to Kurt and Geoff.

Ian described the Perth round as difficult but rewarding. "Perth is a hard river to fish and you really do have to work hard to get your bream. I'd been catching bream okay in pre-fish and I knew that if I could get 5 each day I'd be there abouts. I spent most of my time fishing in between Bunbury Bridge and just past the Narrows. I got my bream by working areas slowly with single tail Atomics and on the first day I had my 5 okay and even managed a few upgrades along the way. The bream weren't really on the bite so you had to slow things down abit to get them.

On the second day I had lost a couple of big bream at the boat, which hurts and with an hour to go I had no bream at all. I knew I just had to catch bream and fished hard right up to the end. I caught 5 bream in that hour but up until then I was hurting. I'm very happy with a top three finish and Team Strudwick took out 3rd & 4th place so we had a great result."

There is only one Tournament left on the WA calendar and that is by invitation only.
