ANOTHER EHRLICH WINS STESSL BASS PRO
(6&7/4/2002)

Following on from his brother, Kerry’s, Humminbird BASS Pro win at Bjelke in February, Toowoomba’s Jason Ehrlich completed an 8/10 bag of bass that weighed 10.54kg to take out the Stessl Boondooma BASS Pro. Fishing soft plastics throughout the tournament, Ehrlich finished fast to beat Toowoomba based Carl Jocumsen (8/10 for 10.14kg), Tim Morgan (8/10 for 10.12kg), John Schofield (9/10 for 9.30kg) and the highest placed non-boater Steve Moran (7/10 for 8.34kg) to the $2500 winner’s cheque.

With 106 anglers fishing the tournament, Lake Boondooma yielded a record 366 bass that were weighed live and released, smashing the existing record of 310, set at the same location in 2001.

But it was Jason Ehrlich that made the most of the productive conditions working out a successful technique to compile his winning bag. Fishing a 3” smoke/yellow core Slider Grub on a 1/2oz Gamakatsu Flathead jig head, Ehrlich presented the rig on a 6’6” Daiwa Procaster-X rod teamed with a Daiwa Regal-X 1500iA reel that was spooled with 6lb Berkley Fireline with a 10lb Berkley Vanish leader.

“I found fish in the Stuart Arm of the lake and noticed two distinctive groups of fish. Closer in to the weeds the fish appeared more active, while further out near the breakline, the fish appeared inactive,’ explained Ehrlich.

Using a modified burn and kill retrieve, Ehrlich would cast out the lure, let it sink to the bottom in 20 – 30’ then fast roll the lure for 20 handle winds. The lure would then be allowed to sink again before a shorter fast roll was used, this process continuing until the lure was fully retrieved.

“Most of the fish hit during the fast roll,” said Ehrlich “but a few would nail the lure as it was paused and sinking. What I did notice was that the fish only hit once, so it was a case of hook them or loose them.’ Luckily for Jason more were hooked than missed on his Slider that had its tail dipped in Spike-It Chartreuse Garlic Scent.

Second placed Carl Jocumsen used a similar tactic to Ehrlich with a 3” Baby Bass Slider, also dipped in Chartreuse Garlic Spike-It his favourite weapon. Presenting the artificial bait on a 1/2oz Gamakatsu Flathead jighead with his Gary Howard 6’6”, 1 – 3kg Samurai spin stick/Shimano Stradic 1000 combo, Jocumsen would cast his lure out, let it sink to 20 – 30’, then burn the lure through the suspending fish. “After the first burn I would let the lure sink back below the fish and repeat the process until the lure was almost below the boat. I was after a reaction strike and this method worked well for the first four sessions,” an excited Jocumsen stated.

Interestingly Carl’s last fish was caught on a 1/2oz purple scale Bassman spinnerbait with a gold Colorado and silver willow blade arrangement. “That last fish just put me above Tim and I will admit to being a little nervous before the final weigh in,” said Jocumsen as he accepted the $1200 second place cheque.

Craig Simmons added the $500 Big Bass prize to his 7th place overall with a magnificent 2.18kg bass that was caught by rolling a spinnerbait along weed edges right up one of the small feeder creeks in the Boyne River Arm.

Also announced at the final presentation was the BASS Pro Angler of the Year. And for the second year running, John Schofield took out the honour of being the most consistent performer on the BASS Pro circuit. For his efforts John will receive free entry into all of the 2003 BASS Pro qualifying events.

With the completion of the qualifying rounds of the BASS Pro series, 30 anglers will be invited to the BASS Pro Grand Final to be held at the Hunter Valley’s Lake St Clair on 4th and 5th of May. This invite-only event will culminate with the announcement of the BASS Pro Grand Final winner and the presentation of the first prize, a fully paid trip to America to fish a professional BASS tournament.
