Observer Boyne Tannum Hook-Up
(7-9/6/2002)

It has been seven years since the inaugural Observer Boyne Tannum Hookup, and the 2002 version was the best yet. The event was recently held over the Queens Birthday weekend.

2365 entries were received which was a record. In that there were over 500 kids,
and many entrants from the southeast corner of Queensland.

The weather wasn’t all that flash as Thursday the venue received much needed rain and then again on Friday during the morning, making the park quite wet underfoot and even worse off shore with 20 knot winds forecast to last well into the afternoon but then abate later in the day.

Most of those who wished to wet a line did so in the creeks and sheltered water of Gladstone Harbour. There were a few brave ones though who ventured out to Rock Cod shoals only to be thumped around by the big chop on top of an already big swell. Many carried on to Masthead to seek shelter behind the Island or Polmaise Reef.

When the sun did decided to come out on the Saturday the wind had dropped down to a more comfortable 10 – 15 knots, and there was nearly a queue up of boats trying to get out through the channel at the mouth of the Boyne.

During the day there were a couple of weigh in sessions where many live fish were weighed in. Again this year the live fish categories which included flathead, mangrove jack, and bream proved to be very popular. I think that with so many TV productions going to air now with predominantly catch and release, the kids and fishermen far and wide are want to keep this sport sustainable. During the weekend a total of 360 live fish were weighed in, tagged and released into the Boyne. There was even one Bream caught in South Trees inlet on the Friday, release and caught again the next day back in South Trees probably 6 or 7 kms from where it was released.

Although there weren’t any records broken during some of the fish caught were of very good quality like the Red Emperor caught by Mark Le Bherz which weighed in at 12.6kg, or Shane Streeters Sweetlip which weighed 6.18kg and Paul Viner’s 15.2 kg Spanish Mackeral.

Many of the kids had a ball too. Young Ricky Read rode sidesaddle on the gunwale to land his 5.24kg snapper and Christian Delpeche landed a beaut 2.60kg Grunter, which ended up being bigger than the senior grunter.

On the final day the sun came out as if it were summer. The wind was predicted to rise again to 20 knots so many didn’t go back out. As the day progressed the park began to fill with people coming for the final draws that evening. By 4.30pm the park was starting to really fill up and the final estimated count was about 7,000 people present.

The major prize was won by Margaret Shaw from Townsville which was a Cruise Craft 5m Explorer with a 90hp Mercury and on a Special Trailer. Valued at over $35,000 Danny Nicol from Cruise Craft drew it out.

The Junior prize which was a 3m Sea Jay Vee nosed punt with a 2.5 hp Mercury was won by young Brendan Warwick from Boyne Island.

The previous two nights two other boats had been drawn out and they were both 4.15m Sea Jay Tinnies with 25hp Mercury’s, and on Special trailers. The kids also had their own prize each night with a Redline BMX bike up for grabs.

This years event had over 100 winners beit, prize draws or daily category winners or winners overall. The profits from this event get channeled back into the community via the Boyne Tannum SES and other community groups.

Much of the praise must go to the Hookup Committee but the thanks go to those who sponsored, or helped out and those who entered, as without all of these this event wouldn’t be where it is today.
