Knol’s Lures Canning River BREAM Challenge
(20/4/2002)

First Ever BREAM Round Won On Fly!
In a first for a BREAM round in Australia, fly angler Ian Sewell took out the Knol’s Lures Canning River BREAM Challenge and won himself over $600 in cash and prizes for his troubles. Adding to his first placing, Ian also took out the big bream award.

Landing the only two bream weighed in for the tournament, Ian used a Meldrum fly, invented by Kim Meldrum, which is similar to a small clouser type fly tied with chartreuse and flash. Sewell said, “I got both the bream very early on in the day up along the reeds banks in the Bull Creek arm of the Canning River. We were fishing along the weed banks and I just kept fishing and fishing and fishing. The more your fly is in the water the better chance you have of getting a bream. I didn’t stop all day”.

The overall WA series was won by WA angler Geoff Spadaccini, who will now travel to NSW in early October to compete against the other top qualifiers from NSW, QLD and Vic. When asked how he felt about winning the WA series Geoff said “Yeah very good, it’s what I wanted, I've competed in some tournaments over east when I was holidaying over there so I really wanted to win as I know I will learn a lot when I’m there for the final”.

The winner of the Humminbird 450TX sounder, drawn randomly from all competitors, was Sean Forward. Sean said “I would like to thank Humminbird for putting up such a prize for the series. Mate, I couldn't be happier, It's actually the first thing I've ever won. Not a bad way to break the drought!”

Junior angler Chris Le Messurier, who is only 16 years old, took out the junior section and also finished 4th overall for the series and the senior anglers had better keep an eye on this young gun next year.

The WA Bream Series would like to thank Knol’s lures, Humminbird through Bob Littler Agencies, Fishing WA for flying the winner of the series to NSW for the final, Shina reels, Hawk line, Stalker Sunglasses, Victoria Park Tackle, Fleets for Tackle in Morley, Craig Campbell for all his help in the setting up and running of the events and every angler who supported this in WA.
