Mark Hayes delivered the tournament’s only 4kg+ bag to the scales on the final day to claim victory at Mallacoota.

Despite owning the smallest boat in the 61-strong field, Victorian breamer and long time ABT angler Mark Hayes brought it home to claim victory in the opening round of the 2017 Costa BREAM Series. The 2017 season kicked off with the BKK Hooks Mallacoota BREAM Qualifier, where anglers were greeted with one of the biggest fields for the past several seasons. A total of 61 of Australia’s best BREAM boaters and 56 non-boaters lined up for their shot at the perfect start to a tournament season.

Boondooma Dam Yellowbelly Fishing Competition spokesman Terry Allwood says that the lake fished extremely well for the 2017 event with 260 fish going through the Catch And Release section and another 329 in the Gilled And Gutted section. The biggest yellowbelly of the event was weighed in at 2.4kg.

They couldn’t all be monsters, but many competitors had fun catching good numbers of fish on the lake.

If you were going to order some weather conditions, be it for a wedding, funeral or fishing competition, you would order the absolute perfect conditions served up to the masses for the recent 2016 Yamaha Cod Classic. Near on 2500 fishers descended on Lake Mulwala and the Murray River to enjoy what was labelled as ‘the perfect event.’ Everything went to plan without a hitch, and the fish came to play as well.
